Looking back, I should have made installation and training a line item from the start. At the time, I was so focused on the printer sticker that I almost missed a $2,200 difference between quotes. One reseller included setup; the other added it on top.

Mimaki's digital printing lineup covers UV-LED flatbeds, roll-to-roll solvent/resin printers, dye-sublimation, and DTF. There's kind of a family resemblance across the machines, which is why a shop often starts with one Mimaki and adds another. We chose DTF because it lets us print on both cotton and polyester without a ton of extra equipment.
In our shop, Mimaki digital printing comes down to a simple workflow: send the file, print CMYK plus white on film, then transfer to the garment. No film positives, no mesh screens, no plate fees. It made short runs profitable for us in a way they weren't before.
How Does the DTF Printer Process Work?

- Let it cool. The film can be stored or pressed immediately.
- Heat press the film onto the garment. We run about 330°F for 12 seconds with medium pressure, then peel the film.
There's something satisfying about a transfer that comes out right the first time. After you've dialed in the powder and oven settings, the first order that leaves without reprints is the payoff.
The part people skip is white ink handling. DTF white ink settles fast, so a production printer needs ink circulation or agitation you don't get in a desktop toy. That's part of what separates a true DTF printer from a machine that's just labeled DTF.
What About the UTV DTF Printer Options?
If you search 'UTV DTF printer,' you'll see machines at a fraction of a Mimaki's price. I looked at one. I hesitated, frankly, because the savings were real.
Here's the thing: the service and support network is also different. Mimaki has authorized service in our region. UTV has a distributor you contact when something breaks. For a small shop, that difference is the whole ballgame when a machine is down in the middle of a job.

What Brother Sublimation Printer Paper Size Do You Need?
This is not a DTF paper question, but I'll answer it because it keeps appearing in the same search results. Most Brother printers that support sublimation take A4 or Letter paper. A4 is 8.27 x 11.69 inches; Letter is 8.5 x 11 inches. Some models also handle A3, but you need to check the spec sheet.
For sublimation, you need sublimation paper in that size, not regular copy paper and not photo paper. And don't use sublimation paper in a DTF printer. DTF uses PET film and different ink. I almost made that mistake myself when we were setting up our heat press. Easy to mix up, expensive if you do.
One other detail: the paper tray size isn't always the printable area. Brother's spec sheet gives the actual printable width. Verify that before you buy 5,000 sheets.
Is a Used Mimaki DTF Printer Worth the Risk?
Used is tempting. I pulled the service history on a used Mimaki DTF printer once. The printhead had been replaced twice in 14 months. The price was almost half of new. I almost talked myself into it.
I have mixed feelings about used equipment. If the distributor inspects it and offers a short warranty, it can make sense. If it's an as-is sale from someone who 'doesn't know the history,' you're buying a risk. Printheads, main boards, and ink lines aren't cheap.
